It won’t take much time reading “trying to conceive” forums before you find mentions of the popular product Preseed. The main question prospective parents-to-be ask is, “does Preseed work?”
Preseed is a personal lubricant that relieves vaginal dryness without harming sperm. It is the only lubricant product allowed to say, “safe to use when trying to conceive.†It is also thought to enhance or improve your natural cervical mucus and thus may aid in conceiving a baby. It’s important to note upfront that no clinical studies have been done to evaluate pregnancy outcomes in people using Preseed. The evidence in respect to using Preseed to increase your chances of getting pregnant is, at this point, anecdotal.
How does Preseed Work?
Studies indicate that most vaginal lubricants should not be used when trying to conceive, including popular brands like K-Y and Astroglide, because they may interfere with sperm motility (their ability to swim) and DNA quality.
Preseed, on the other hand, is formulated to match your natural cervical mucus in pH, osmolality (particle concentration), and viscosity (consistency).
- pH– Sperm need alkaline conditions (ideal pH between 7.0 and 8.5), which your fertile cervical mucus naturally provides. Preseed maintains this alkalinity while other vaginal lubricants tend to have pH values below 7.0 and as low as 3.5 (very acidic and deadly to sperm.
- Osmolality – Semen has a specific particle concentration that keeps sperm motile and healthy. Typical lubricants have higher particle concentrations then sperm can tolerate which can cause them to stop moving and render them unable to fertilize an egg. In contrast, Preseed’s osmolality matches that of semen and thus does not harm or damage sperm.
- Viscosity – The texture of many vaginal lubricants also negatively affect fertility by inhibiting the sperm from traveling up the vagina and through the cervix quickly and efficiently. They remain in the vagina too long and die in the acidic conditions before reaching the uterus. Preseed’s viscosity is designed to work with your natural vaginal secretions to keep sperm moving towards the waiting egg.
Can Preseed Help You Get Pregnant Faster?
Many happy (pregnant!) customers swear that Preseed helped them conceive, and as mentioned above, studies haven’t yet been done to indicate a positive effect on fertility. Having “sex on demand†when trying to conceive can be physically and emotionally draining. Some fertility drugs cause drying of vaginal secretions, and cervical mucus production also seems to slow down with aging. All of these factors can inhibit a couple’s sexual response. A safe and effective vaginal lubricant like Preseed may aid conception simply by making sex more exciting and comfortable. After all, anything that encourages you to have more sex, more often, can’t hurt your chances of getting pregnant!
